Quitting
smoking can be tough. But there's strength in numbers. Support
from others can go a long way. Do you know someone who wants
to quit smoking? Let them know you care about their health.
Support them as they try to quit.
Before Quit Day
Help your smoker prepare to quit. Share helpful tips about how
to quit tobacco use.
Remind your friend or family member about how great he or she
will feel when no longer smoking.
On Quit Day
Help you friend or family member keep his or her mind off smoking.
Suggest other thing to do. Offer to walk or exercise at lunch
or on breaks.
Bring in a bag of carrots for your friend or family member to
munch on.
Help your friend or family member deal with urges to smoke.
Remind him or her that the urge will pass in a few minutes.
You Made It!
Offer lots of praise right away!
Do something fun. Buy little gifts such as flowers or movie
tickets.
If slips occur, let your friend or family member know that you
still care. Encourage him or her to try again.
Continue to play your supportive role
Don't blame yourself or others if quitting doesn't last. Learn
what you can from each try. Quitting is difficult.
Whether
you've quit, or helped someone else quit, be proud.
Even if it's only for a day, a week or a month -
every quit attempt is a step toward a healthier life.
